I was referred to Dr. Matheus by another neurosurgeon due to the complexity of my case to fix severe spinal cord compression within my thoracic spine. My spinal cord was so compressed that it was already classified as an injury.
When I met Dr. Matheus, he immediately put me to ease. He is very knowledgeable and has an excellent bedside manner. Dr. Matheus explained my condition and how the surgery would work by using my MRI as a guide . When I explained that I was very nervous because it was my thoracic spine, he told me not to worry as he's worked on way more complex cases than mine. He did this with the utmost confidence and compassion.
As this wasn't my first rodeo with spinal surgery (my 4th actually!), I knew I had to be very selective with my surgeon. It is very hard to know what a surgeon's expertise is from an insurance site - most will work on cervical or lumbar issues - but many don't do thoracic cases. I asked another surgeon how many surgeries he had done in the past year on thoracic and he said 4-5; I knew he wasn't the one for me despite his excellent record and reputation.
The staff at Dr. Matheus' office is pleasant and professional. They do have a strict policy on arrival (15 minutes prior) which they stick to ---- so please plan to pad your time to get there. I really appreciate this efficiency. For last my surgery in Texas, I sometimes would wait 1 - 1.5 hours to see the neurosurgeon - of course, I waited because of the necessity. Thus, just know you will be visiting a knowledgeable and friendly office.
I feel very blessed to have had Dr. Virgilio Matheus perform my surgery - I believe God prepared him for his life's journey to help others as he is an angel on earth.

As Always Dr Matheus is a very kind and compassionate Surgeon who knows his stuff. He now has his own niche in the Orlando Health Neurosurgery Wing and it’s beautiful!
